The Old Gods of DC Universe

Old God were monumental beings that towered over other races and filled with great power. They had immense power at their disposal such as renewing life, healing injuries and their power could be channeled to gift a person superhuman powers. It was said that they fed on the faith of mortals. It was known that they had manufactured weapons beyond the comprehension of the New Gods that could tear infinity apart. One weapon was an energy entity that captured its foe and absorbed them into itself whereupon it used their battle skills against their former allies. Such a construct was able to fashion a body itself from local material such as wreckage and reform any damaged limbs with such raw material present during the course of a battle.

Origin :

Around 18 billion years ago, the Old Gods originated from GodWorld (also known as Asgard or Urgrund) during the "First World". About 3 billion years later, the "First World" slowly segued into the "Second World" as the humanoid lifeforms on GodWorld attained godhood, thus becoming the Old Gods. Then there was a desturuction so enormous that it unleashed a force of energy known as the Godwave that swept across the universe 40,000 years past. Wherever it touched, the Wave placed the seeds of divinity and on a hundred million worlds it created pantheons of gods. Once it reached the edge of nothingness, it doubled back but at reduced power where it became responsible for creating super-powered beings that were akin to demigods. Such a world was Earth, which produced its first own such gods. This was the beginning of the "Third World". This destructive act that shattered the Old God's home led to the formation of two new planets known as Apokolips and New Genesis thus leading to the rise of "New Gods". About 30,000 years ago, the denizens of the planets would eventually obtain Godhood and traits mirroring that of the Old Gods, but would be split in terms of moral alignment. New Genesis became dedicated to peace and goodness. Apokolips developed into a cruel, warlike culture. The "Fourth World" began when these New Gods attained godhood and repeated the history of the Old Gods as New Genesis and Apokolips waged war against each other, causing the hostilities to remain to the present day.

Destruction :

An eternity ago, leadership of the Old Gods was in the hands of Wotan who was met with by visions of an old crone that spoke of doom to their world that would tear it asunder. For her words, Wotan unleashed his power and killed her but her heart was still alive with it being uncovered by the bastard son Lokee who was the God of Discord. Lokee consumed the heart whereupon he was transformed into the true God of Evil. With his new found power, Lokee brought his evil throughout the world causing reason to descend into chaos. This Ragnarok fell upon their civilization 5,000,000,000 years ago where their kind died. Among the ranks of the Old Gods was Gog who stood among his kin. It was then that the Old Gods waged war against one another where they bathed their world in blood with this butchered the peace. Gog claimed that he alone condemned the war and refused to choose a side with him being cast out. Before the birth of the current universe, the Old Gods lived in the world of Urgrund where they waged a terrifying war with weapons that tore infinity apart. At some point, created the primordial annihilator known as Mageddon in the language of New Genesis. This weapon was deployed in the reign of the Old Gods where it was sent across the shining bridge to destroy the star-city of Joyous Home. After the demise of the Old Gods, a race of vastly terrible creatures emerged known as the Shadow Elementals that ruled the shadow cosmos. The most dangerous of the shadow elements was S'ivaa the Dancer of Destruction who slept beneath the Eternal Sea on New Genesis. One account stated that eons ago, the Old Gods were destroyed in the final cataclysm of the second world.

Members :

Arzaz

The Old Gods of DC Universe

Arzaz is a benevolent Old God of the First World who acted as the first of the Old Gods of Order. Arzaz survived the destruction of the First World that nearly destroyed the rest of his kind and eventually chose to live on the planet Naftali as a monk in solitude. During the Genesis events, Arzaz chose to return to his original god form and assist the heroes of Earth and Takion against Darkseid and the Nameless One, another Old God and the first of the Old Gods of Chaos who managed to survive the destruction of the Old Gods. As a result of his final battle with the Nameless One, Arzaz became imprisoned in the Source Wall.

Dreggs
The largest group of surviving Old Gods today are the mindless beings known as the Dreggs, who fight never-ending battles and wander aimlessly through Necropolis, the ruins of their old world below the surface of Apokolips. The Dreggs are practically walking corpses without purpose. Power and brute force are the only things that affect them.

Geridath
The Old Gods of DC Universe

Geridath is a Promethean Giant. Promethean Giants are massive beings who existed before the rise of the New Gods. In their hubris, they sought to breach the Source wall and become one with the Source. For their transgressions, they were imprisoned by the Source in the Promethean galaxy, chained to massive celestial bodies, which served as their own machines for breaching the Source.

Two Promethean Giants were released from their imprisonment. One, Prodigian, was released by Mars, Roman God of war and Counterpart to Ares. He was drafted by Metron to release Darkseid from the Source wall by taking his place in it. He was, however, tricked by Mars into instead taking the place of Ares, who was also imprisoned there. To this day he still lies in the Source wall.

The second one, Gedirath, was outfitted with a mind control device by Darkseid and turned into a weapon. Darkseid used him to attack Orion who at the times possessed the anti life equation, but Orion was able to overcome him. What became of him is unknown.

Promethean Giants are absolutely massive in size, with Gedirath being able to hold the Earth in the palm of his hand without trouble. Given their massive size, they perceive time at a far slower rate than us. To Prodigian, his eons long imprisonment was nothing but a short incarceration, and the little chat Prodigian and Metron had took centuries in normal time. Also as a result of their size, they are famed for their strength and power, which the gods such as Metron, Mars, and Darkseid have admitted. Powerful as they are, they are still nothing compared to the eternal Source.

Gog

The Old Gods of DC Universe

Gog is an Old God from the Third World who rooted himself to the Earth with the consequence that if he left, the earth would die shortly after. He is also known as Planetary Parasitism (planetary parasite). The ability to root oneself into any planet and completely drain its life-force. The user can drain the bio-kinetic energies held within entire planets and leave them to wither into barren wastelands upon departure. This ability makes it especially difficult for an opponent to destroy the user, as the user essentially integrates their existence into the survival of the world they are currently placed on.

Ligea
Ligra was trapped in the Source Wall but managed to escape when Orion freed her by blasting the wall with his harness.  When she was freed her visage disappeared from the wall.  She then she tricked Orion and tossed him at the Source Wall.  Orion was able to escape the Source Wall with use of his Mother Box and tossed her back to the wall.

Lokee

The Old Gods of DC Universe

Lokee was an ancient god of evil who was instrumental in starting the catastrophical war that consumed the GodWorld and put an end to the glory that was the Old Gods. Lokee himself perished in this war, but echoes of the Old Gods remain in the names of the gods of Earth. [Note: Lokee is not to be confused with the Norse/Teutonic god known as Loki. He was the illegitimate son of Wotan, the ruler of the Old Gods. When Wotan struck out in anger and killed the soothsayer who foretold the impeding doomsday, Lokee sensed the powers that lay in the remains of the old crone and devoured her heart. In the process, Lokee was transfigured into a true god of evil.

Sowing the seeds of discord, Lokee gathered an army which he led against his father in a battle which eventually destroyed the GodWorld. Lokee is believed to have been killed in battle.
Mageddon

The Old Gods of DC Universe

Mageddon was one of many war machines used during the Ragnarok of the "Old Gods" that led to the destruction of their world and the subsequent creation of New Genesis and Apokolips. Mageddon was capable of unleashing primal anger in intelligent minds, turning people into hostile, warlike savages. Unable to be destroyed, Mageddon was "chained" at the edge of the universe's space/time continuum inside what was described as an "immense sinkhole" of gravity. The gigantic planet of Wonderworld was created and the placed at the edge of the universe to prepare for the day that Mageddon would escape; it was populated by a number of gigantic heroes and super-beings. These heroes were led by Adam One and surrounded themselves with wonders from throughout the universe.

Mageddon exists to cause life forms to fight against one another and is quoted as being more akin to a force of nature than a sentient being.

Nameless One

The Old Gods of DC Universe

The Nameless One is a malevolent Old God of the First World who acted as the first of the Old Gods of Chaos. The Nameless One survived the destruction of the First World that nearly destroyed the rest of his kind and had eventually chosen to live on Earth in obscurity for an undisclosed amount of time. During the Genesis event, the Nameless One chose to join forces with Darkseid due to the New God possessing power and authority that mostly corresponded to his own in the past. As a result of his final battle with Arzaz, the Nameless One became imprisoned in the Source Wall.

Sirius

The Old Gods of DC Universe

Sirius is an Old God of the First World who lived under the surface of Apokolips. Sirius had survived the destruction of the First World that nearly destroyed the rest of his kind and roamed the underground tunnels of Apokolips called the Black Ways as both their eternal guardian and their prisoner, killing all who ventured down there. At one point, Sirius encountered Mister Miracle as a child and spared him because he saw the potential for great good in the boy. Sirius died while protecting Orion's life during their encounter, thereby finally finding release from his eternal imprisonment.

S'ivaa

The Old Gods of DC Universe

After the death of the Old Gods and before the rise of the new, there was a time when monstrous shadow elementals walked he cosmos. The last of them remaining is S'ivaa, the Dancer of destruction, a powerful monster whose dance could destroy the universe. When the New Gods came to power, S'ivaa fell asleep under the eternal sea on New Genesis, there sleeping undisturbed for eons. When Darkseid corrupted the Source S'ivaa awoke, and immediately proceeded to carry out his purpose. With all the Gods either powerless or uncaring due to the madness in the Source, S'ivaa made way to the middle point between Apokolips and New Genesis. There, he began his dance of destruction, which, when completed, would tear apart the fabric of space and time. To battle him, Highfather called upon Superman and Orion to stall S'ivaa, while himself and Darkseid sought to breach the Source and undo the damage Darkseid has done.

Eventually, S'ivaa was defeated when Superman and Orion tossed him through a hole in space he himself created, hurling him to the rupture in the Source Wall created by Highfather and Darkseid. S'ivaa was pulled into the Source Wall, becoming a part of it forever. S'ivaa's powers were vast. As a shadow elemental, he was immune to the powers of Gods, like Omega Effect and Astro-Force, which is why Highfather had to draft Superman to help them.

Wotan

The Old Gods of DC Universe

Ages ago, the sorcerer now known as Wotan was a prehistorical woman who lived in a cold, dark wasteland. After being raped and beaten to the brink of death, the woman was determined to discover the reasons, if any, for human existence and the suffering it entails. Escaping her tormentors, she found refuge with an aged shaman who taught her the mystical arts. The future Wotan grew to become a powerful sorceress that was worshiped as a goddess. Seeking to escape death, she learned how to extend her life by transferring her soul into another body, and finally to direct her own reincarnation into other bodies (or controlled re-birth, as Wotan named it). After thousands of incarnations, becoming both male and female, the sorceress eventually becoming the male sorcerer Wotan, named after the ruler of the gods in Norse and Germanic mythology.

Conclusion :

Although the Old Gods are long believed to be dead and gone, recent events transpired that have showed some of them have survived their racial extinction. The largest group of surviving Old Gods are the mindless beings known as the Dreggs, who live below the surface of Apokolips. Arzaz, Gog and the Nameless One are imprisoned in the Source Wall.
