The Life Equation is a direct contradiction to that of the Anti-Life Equation. The Life Equation is not only understood as a mathematical equation, but as the combination of the lights of the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum ( Hope, Fear, Rage, Compassion, Avarice, Will and Love). These various spectrum powers the Lanterns rings. After the war between the OLD GODS ended with a big bang, a white light or god wave which was hurled across the universe creating New Gods. There was also Anti-matter universe which was created at the same time (New Genesis - Life and Planet Apokolips - Anti-Life). The White Light of Life is said to be the spark that originally gave birth to the positive matter universe of Earth-Zero just as the Anti-Life gave rise to the antimatter universe. If you obtain all the Lantern's rings you have the true equation of Life.
Around 300 years ago, when Darkseid found out that Martians philosophy was based on Life Equation, he believed that there must be an Anti-Life Equation and so he began his search for the equation to bring order to the universe. Anti-Life Equation, a formula to take total control over the minds of sentient and sapient beings. With it one not only as the power to not only alienate and alternate freewill but are also able to change the very dictation of all reality as a whole by changing the equation's formula. Darkseid can insert the full formula into people's minds, giving them the mathematical certainty that life, hope and freedom are all pointless.

This is explained in Final Crisis comics where Darkseid succeeds in obtaining the equation and the nightmare that followed. In the New 52 the Anti-Life has much of the same powers it had as well as interesting newer ones, for starters aside from its ability to give one complete control over a persons thoughts and actions, right down to the motor functions of a living being. It can also resurrect the dead reviving them as soulless beings that is slaved to the users will.
